Description:

This classic American long rifle is attributed to John Schweitzer active circa 1826-1864 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Despite being commonly called the Kentucky rifle, the American long rifle originated in Pennsylvania in the 18th century and was initially hand crafted by frontiersmen of Germanic origin. For many years the long rifle was rather plainly made but by the late 18th century trends shifted towards elaborately decorated rifles such as this which were usually hand built and embellished by a single American gunmaker which differed largely from European shops in which workers specialized in particular aspects such as engraving or carving. The unmarked octagon barrel of this example has blade front and u-notch rear sights, and other features include a removable flash pan, brass furniture, American Eagle silver plaque on the cheek rest, "B" marked silver initial shield on the upper wrist, and double set triggers. The ornate patch box and side plate have simple but attractive engraving designs. The full length maple stock has nice incised carved accents including a nice section of scroll work on the left side of the butt. The rifle includes a wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock. The barrel displays a mixture of brown patina and finish with several dings and nicks along its length and pitting at the breech. The lock similarly displays brown patina with traces of brown finish and some oxidation. The brass and silver furniture display attractive aged patinas with distinct designs. The stock is also fine with some silvers and chips absent, a repair near the lock, some scratches, and attractive carved designs. The action/trigger needs some minor alteration but is complete. Overall, a fine example of the style of firearms many American pioneers used for generations.
