The factory letter states this early Second Model rifle was received in the warehouse on December 31, 1877, and shipped on May 8, 1878, with a special order set trigger. The letter simply lists the barrel as "Octagon". Not mentioned in the letter are the following features: extra long barrel and magazine tube, combination front sight, sporting rear sight, or tang mounted peep sight. It is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight wrist stock with a butt compartment for a cleaning rod (not included). The barrel has the standard two-line address and King's improvement marking. The serial number is on the lower tang, and the upper tang has the model marking. "LLV" has been hand marked on the bottom of the elevator.

Good as period cleaned and fitted with replacement sights. The rifle has mottled gray and brown patina along with traces of the original finish, light-mild pitting, and some minor oxidation. The wood is very good with scattered scrapes and dings. The action and set trigger function fine, and the markings are crisp.
