New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action Carbine
This Volcanic carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1860 and has a polished brass ("gunmetal") receiver and crescent buttplate. Most Volcanic carbines featured factory scroll engraving and examples like this one with a plain finish are rare. The carbine has a 16 inch blued octagon barrel and integral magazine with casehardened hammer, trigger and loading lever. The straight grain walnut stock has an oil finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver cone front sight blade. A wheel-adjustable rear sight was originally mounted in a dovetail on the receiver; the original rear sight on this rifle has been replaced with a period fixed aperture rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENT" and "FEB 14, 1854". This modified legend was introduced in April 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "2236", is stamped right side of the loading lever. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured an estimated total of 1,000 Volcanic carbines between 1857 and 1860. The revolutionary Volcanic carbines featured self-cocking lever actions, integral spring-loaded magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with self-contained propellant and primer. Although the Volcanic carbines were not a commercial success, the development of reliable cartridges allowed the Volcanic lever action and integral magazine to serve as the basis for the successful Henry rifle and the Winchester Model 1866 and 1873 rifles. The investment of shirt manufacturer Oliver Winchester in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. eventually resulted in the establishment of the New Haven Arms Co. and the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Scarce and Desirable Jennings Breech Loading Single Shot Rifle
Only a small number of the Jennings rifles were manufactured by Robbins and Lawrence in 1848-1852. The Jennings rifles mark the important second step in the evolution of what eventually became the Volcanic, Henry, and Winchester lever actions. Work on the Jennings rifles at Robbins and Lawrence is credited with bringing together B. Tyler Henry, Horace Smith, and Daniel Wesson under the same roof and thus helped lead to both what became the highly successful Winchester lever action series and the iconic Smith & Wesson partnership. This example is the single shot variant produced circa 1850-1851 using Jennings repeater components adapted for single shot use. The magazine tube used on the repeaters was adapted to hold the cleaning rod. A small rectangular loading gate allows loading of single "Rocket Ball" cartridges. The ring trigger pushes the breechblock into place and operates the automatic pill primer. Beginning in 1852, Robbins and Lawrence abandoned the underpowered rocket ball cartridge in favor of building muzzle loading variants. Many of the original breech loaders were altered by outside gunsmiths into muzzle loaders as well and consequently many of the already scarce single shots are no longer found in original form. This example escaped conversion. It is marked "PATENT 1849/C.P. DIXON AGENT/NEW YORK" on the left side of the action. "WJ" is stamped behind the trigger guard. It features post and notch sights and is fitted with a straight wrist walnut stock with German silver inscription plate on the right and a sporting buttplate. A sling swivel is fitted in front of the trigger guard, and a stud for a second swivel is on the barrel band.

This Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle features the dust cover guide rail secured on the top of the receiver with two screws and dust cover with rear serrations. Front blade sight base only and elevation adjustable rear sight with a barrel stamped with the two line address/patent dates marking on the top. The upper tang is stamped "MODEL 1873." Full length magazine, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). Attached to the lever are two metal tags. The first tag is marked "B31/68394/1881/1873WIM." The second tag is marked "B31/68394" (numbers that match the numbers on the first tag) above "COL. W.F. CODY/HUNG IN SALOON/IRMA MOTEL." The Irma Hotel Saloon is located in downtown Cody, Wyoming; the city that Wild West showman Col. William "Buffalo Bill" Cody helped found in 1895. In 1902, Cody built the Irma Hotel, which today still offers lodging to travelers. According to the hotel's website, "You can even stay in Buffalo Bill's private suite." Cody named the hotel for his daughter. Buffalo Bill was born William Fredrick Cody in 1846, not more than 30 miles from Rock Island Auction Company near the small river town of LeClaire' Iowa in Scott County, right on the Mississippi River. In 1863, he joined the Union Army and served with the 7th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Regiment throughout the Civil War. In 1868 he again joined the U.S. Army as an civilian scout and guide with the 5th Calvary. In 1872 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for valor during the Indian Wars. In late 1872, Cody went to Chicago to make his stage debut in The Scouts of the Prairie, one of Ned Buntline’s original Wild West shows (Buntline was also the author of the Buffalo Bill novels). In 1883, Cody founded his own show "Buffalo Bill's Wild West", a circus-like extravaganza that toured widely for three decades in the United States and later throughout Europe. Besides Buffalo Bill himself, the Wild West show starred sharpshooter Annie Oakley, Chief Sitting Bull, real wild west cowboys and range hands as extras and stand-ins. Accompanying the rifle is a Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show presentation cane. The cane has a hardwood shaft and a silver plated, inscribed handle. The inscription reads, "WALLACE R. STEMSEN/Buffalo Bills/WILD WEST/1891&2. Overall length: 33 1/2 inches.

The letters also state that records from the Cody Firearms Museum list this rifle as "Rifle, Express, Octagon barrel and a plain trigger" and indicate that it was shipped from the Winchester factory on May 13, 1879. The letter further states that the hand engraved markings on the barrel and dust cover are correct for early production Model 1876 Express rifles. The Madis letter also states that examination of the rifle indicates that it may have been used in cartridge development at Winchester before being nickel plated and stocked with "XX" walnut for a special order. The combination of a 50-95 Express chambering, nickel plated finish and checkered, fancy grain stock and forearm is rare.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 31 Volcanic
This pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1860, and has an integral six-shot magazine, brass "gunmetal" frame with flat bottom grip and loading lever with round finger hole. The barrel has an iron front sight with short, flat blade. A simple notched rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The barrel has a high polish blue finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14 1854". The serial number "1445" is visible on the left side of the frame beneath the grip and is stamped on the inside of both grips. The side plates, top and sides of the frame and back strap are decorated with the open scrollwork utilized by the New Haven Arms Co. on most No.1 Pocket pistols. Volcanic pistols and carbines are scarce and historically significant. Oliver Winchester's association with Volcanic firearms eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., and the revolutionary Volcanic design combined with self-primed and self-contained cartridges marked the introduction of practical repeating magazine firearms.

Winchester 1876 Rifle 50-95 Winchester Express
This English Short Express Rifle Model 1876 is configured similarly to the Model 1886 Light Weight in that it has a short 22 inch barrel (although not tapered), rifle style forearm, short magazine tube, and shotgun butt. A similar example is pictured on page 238 of The Winchester Book by Madis. In the data discussed on page 253 of the above book, Madis notes that only one of each 800 had a shorter than average barrel. This example was manufactured in 1880 and features the second model screw secured guide rail and checkered thumb rest. The dust cover is hand inscribed "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." The barrel has the two line address and patent information on top ahead of the rear sight, ".50 CAL" at the breech, and British proofmarks and "Z3499" on the left. The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the serial number. The brass cartridge elevator is marked "50-95". The rifle has a German silver blade front sight and a two leaf express rear sight with silver sighting lines. The .50-95 Winchester Express was the largest caliber available for the Model 1876 and proved popular with big and dangerous game hunters. Many Model 1876 rifles chambered for this powerful cartridge were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India where they were often employed against big cats. Theodore Roosevelt loved his .45-75 '76, but he and other Americans scorned the .50 Express, and thus, the Model 1876 was only produced in limited numbers chambered for that cartridge compared to the smaller calibers.
