This First Model 1873 Winchester Saddle Ring carbine was manufactured in 1875 and has the mortised dust cover guides and integral checkered thumb piece. It has a blade front sight on the front band and a folding leaf rear sight graduated for 100, 300, and 500 yards. The barrel is marked with the two-line Winchester address and King's improvement patent marking ahead of the rear sight. The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the serial number. It has a varnished forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate with an empty compartment.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Patches of original blue finish can be seen primarily in the protected areas and the balance has primarily brown patina. There are spots of oxidation and pitting. The elevator has some golden yellow varnish/finish. The lightly sanded, undersize refinished wood is also fair with some dings, scrapes, bruising, and evidence of a crack on the left side of the comb. The action functions fine, and the markings are legible.
