Description:

Manufactured in 1904 and, although there are no visible caliber markings, the rifle chambers the rare and very desirable .405 Winchester cartridge. Theodore Roosevelt had a high regard for his personal Winchester Model 1895s in .405 that he utilized during his African safari. This rifle has a full blue finish with nicely figured checkered walnut stock and forearm. The forearm has an ebony inlay on the tip and the stock is fitted with a solid recoil pad. The underside of the buttstock is stamped with the numbers "5/445." The barrel is fitted with a period retailer applied solid rib, which is equipped with a blade front sight and an express leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. The left side of the barrel is marked with the nickel steel marking. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895", and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The factory letter indicates the rifle was received in the warehouse on October 10, 1904, and shipped out two days later as art of order number 248097. It was repaired and returned on April 24, 1905, on order number 1226. The letter also confirms the "fancy stock, checkered", rifle configuration, shotgun butt, oil finish, and caliber.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period safari grade sporterized with raised solid matte rib and express leaf sights added. The rifle retains 60% original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The wood is very fine showing some minor handing marks with some blemishes in the checkering. The rubber recoil pad has collapsed and hardened. Mechanically excellent.
