This example was manufactured in 1878 with the First Model's distinctive dust cover with checkered oval thumb rest fitted in guide grooves on the top of the frame. Later models had a center rail and transitioned to a dust cover with serrations at the end. Also note the two screws above the trigger which are absent on later versions. It features a single set trigger and German silver blade and elevation adjustable sporting sights. The extra length barrel is restamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking on the top. The upper tang is stamped "MODEL 1873," while the lower tang has the serial number; both are in script. It is fitted with a full length magazine, smooth forearm with cap, and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate with compartment. The compartment currently has a spent .44-40 case. The caliber is not designated on the barrel or elevator because the early production rifles were all chambered for the .44-40 cartridge.

Very good as refinished/remarked (barrel address). The rifle retains nearly all of the refinished blue, niter blue, and case colors. Some faint signs of prior pitting and wear can be seen beneath the finish. The elevator has a lightly aged patina. The wood is near new. The action is excellent, and the markings are clear.
