Description:

This is a solid example of a Winchester Model 1866 Rifle that was manufactured in 1869. The rifle has a full octagon barrel and special order factory sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." The serial number is marked on the lower tang followed by "A". Dovetailed blade front sight and a Henry style folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards. The barrel, magazine tube and loading gate were finished blue, and the receiver, forend cap and buttplate are brass. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth mottled brown patina. The hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina. The receiver , forend cap and buttplate have an aged patina (darker on the forend cap and buttplate). There are a number of period intentionally made scratches on the left side of the receiver and what appears to be a name scratched into the upper left front. The wood is very good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
