This professionally built custom rifle has a heavy part octagon barrel fitted with an adjustable globe front sight and marked with the one line "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." address on the top flat. The barrel has no provision for a rear sight and instead a long range Vernier peep sight with adjustable aperture is mounted to the upper tang and a second mounting plate is fitted to the comb for back position use. The barrel is marked "40" ahead of the forearm and "640" and "J.M" underneath it. The matching serial number is on the lower tang. The action has scrollwork engraving and border designs along with the standard markings. It is mounted on a smooth walnut forearm and checkered pistol grip stock with hard rubber shotgun buttplate and ebony grip insert.

Very fine as professionally custom built, engraved, and refinished. The rifle retains nearly all of the blue/casehardened finish with only light handling and storage marks. The highly figured walnut buttstock and forearm wood are both very fine with sharp checkering and two stress cracks present on left rear side of forearm at frame juncture. The action functions fine and the markings and engraving designs are crisp.
