Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1899. The rifle has a caliber 38-55 W.C.F., half octagon/half round No. 3 barrel and Schuetzen double set trigger with long loop lever. The barrel is fitted with a wind gauge front sight with Spirit level. A mid-range Vernier peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The Schnabel tip forearm and pistol grip stock are fancy grain walnut with fine checkered panels. The forearm tip has an ebony insert and the pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.". The stock is fitted with a special order brass nickel-plated Swiss buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-". The caliber designation, "38-55" is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. "PAT/OCT. 7. 79" is stamped on the lower tang behind the rear trigger and the serial number, "82497" is stamped between the rear tang screws. The barrel has the Winchester commercial blue finish. The thin side receiver, breechblock, hammer and lever are color casehardened with vivid case colors. The double set triggers are niter blue. The stock and forearm have a low luster piano finish. The accompanying factory letter and ledger copy verify the Schuetzen set trigger, pistol grip lock, that it was received in the warehouse on January 17, 1899, and shipped to order number 20047 the next day.

Excellent plus. The rifle retains 99% of the original blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The barrel and front sight retain nearly all of the Winchester commercial blue finish. The factory legend and caliber markings are perfect. The receiver, breech blocks and hammer have vivid case colors with a faint amount of edge wear on high points. Nearly all of the fire blue finish is present on the set triggers. The Swiss buttplate has some very minor handling wear and retains about 95% of the nickel plated finish. The fancy grade walnut stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition and retain nearly all of the original finish. The checkering is extremely sharp. Wear is limited to several very minor handling marks on the bottom and right side of the stock. This is an outstanding example of a special order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Sporting Rifle.
