Description:

This No. 1 Rolling Block rifles were manufactured from the late 1860s until around 1890. This rifle has a German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The barrel is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." ahead of the rear sight and has a "40" ahead of the forend. The barrel underneath the forend is marked "P.G." and "E.S." indicating the rifle was ordered with a pistol grip stock and extra sights. The upper tang is tapped for peep sight mounting. The externally marked lower tang and the silvered out, one casehardened barrel both have the matching serial number. The left side of the receiver at the front has the patent information including the 1873 patent date. The smooth matching serialized forearm has a curved iron forend cap, and the pistol grip buttstock has checkering on the grip, a horn grip insert, and a shotgun style iron buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blue and case colors have faded to an uneven brown and gray patina. The silvered out, once casehardened receiver is patchy. The forend cap has some oil/varnish. The re-oiled wood is very good with some minor marks in the crisp checkering, light scratches, and a few pressure marks. The markings are mostly crisp, and the action is fine.
