Description:

This rifle was manufactured circa 1842-1848 and is marked "WESSON & PRESCOTT/NORTHBORO/MASS" and "CAST STEEL/386" on the barrel between the breech and rear sight surrounded by two eagle motifs. The lock plate is also marked "WESSON & PRESCOTT". The top of the buttplate has a compartment for caps. Additional features include the double set triggers, grip extension trigger guard, blade front and elevation adjustable notch sights, muzzle designed for a false muzzle or bullet starter, and a tap in the upper tang for a peep sight. It was designed without a forend. Wesson & Prescott was one several business ventures of Edwin Wesson who was well known for his target rifles in the 1840s. He was the older brother of both Daniel Baird Wesson (of Smith & Wesson fame) and Frank Wesson. Given that this rifle was manufactured in the 1840s, it is entirely possible that Daniel B. Wesson was in part responsible for its production during his apprenticeship. The right side of the straight wrist walnut buttstock has a round patch box with some old patches inside.

Rating Definition:

Good with some absent/replacement parts. Most of the metal surfaces have a dark brown patina with some minor marks and scratches. The German silver fittings have an aged patina and some verdigris. The stock is fine with two cracks in the toe, a chip at the junction with the action, and some small abrasions and pressure marks. The action is fine. The rear sight may be a period replacement and is missing the elevator. The ramrod is also absent. The markings and engraving patterns are mostly crisp.
