Description:

This back action percussion rifle was manufactured circa 1850-1880 and is marked "J. O. Robson Buffalo/681" and "CAST STEEL" on the upper left flat behind the rear sight. The barrel is turned down at the muzzle for a bullet starter and is fitted with blade front and adjustable notch rear sights. The lock is engraved with a hunter on horseback and two dogs pursuing a buck in a pastoral scene and is accented by scroll engraving which also extends to the hammer and other components. The patch box lid has a reposed buck. The upper tang has a tap for a rear peep sight. The rifle is fitted on a walnut half stock with a curved buttplate, trigger guard with grip extension, and checkered straight grip pierced with silver pins. The barrel is finished brown, and the other components were likely casehardened. The rifle includes a wooden ramrod with brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a mixture of remnants of the brown finish, a brown patina, and oxidation. The remaining components have a mix of gray and brown patina. The stock is fine as repaired with a series of repairs at the grip which may have completed in period. The action is fine, and the markings and engraving patterns are generally crisp.
