Description:

This pair of pistols bears the retailer marking "Hodgson & Co." in script on the left side of the actions. There are also light engraving designs and accents. A few possible identities exist for Hodgson & Company: A Hodgson & Co. importer and merchant is known to have operated in Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1780-1800 and Hodgson gunsmiths are also identified as having been active from 1790-1835 in Ispwich, Suffolk, and around 1805 in London. A less likely firm is the Hodgson & Co. of Newcastle which was active in the mid-19th century. The overall style of these pistols suggest they were produced circa 1800. The bottom of the actions near the breech has a set of deep "crown/P" proofmarks indicating the pistols originated from an English shop. They have no sights, sliding safety mechanisms which prevent the frizzen from opening in the case of an accidental strike, and dark walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The pistol remains partially bright with a light aged patina on the brass and a dark brown patina on the iron which also displays pitting and oxidation. There are some minor marks and blemishes including some vice marks. The grip is also very good and has small dings and scratches and a few expertly repaired cracks. The action is fine.
