Description:

Wesson & Leavitt Belt Revolver manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts c. 1850-1851. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel and frame while the side-plate, hammer, and trigger are color case-hardened. The six-shot cylinder is finished bright and decorated with acid-etched floral designs and dry needle engraving. The trigger guard and back strap are gold plated and the two piece grips are highly figured fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish. The frame, side-plate, hammer, and trigger guard are engraved with well-executed open scrollwork on a lined background. The back strap is engraved with double line and wavy-line borders. The top strap is roll-stamped: "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" in two lines. "WESSON'S & LEAVITT'S PATENT" is roll-stamped on the side plate. The revolver is accompanied by a mahogany case lined with dark blue velvet. The case has five compartments and contains: (1) brass flat top ramrod, (2) brass, bow-leg, double cavity mold for round balls and conical bullets marked: "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the left block, (3) pocket pistol powder flask with fixed charger embossed on both sides with an eagle design, (4) 100 count tin of Eley percussion caps with green paper label, and (5) key.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver retains 97% plus of the original blue, case-hardened, gold-plated, and acid-etched finish and shows only very minimal handling wear. Nearly all of the high polish blue finish is present on the barrel and frame. The cylinder retains most of the bright and acid etched finish. Wear is limited to some very minor discolorations on the cylinder face. The hammer and side plate have strong case colors. The trigger guard and back strap retain nearly all of the gold plated finish. The markings, dry needle engraving on the cylinder, and hand engraving on the other components are extremely sharp. The excellent highly figured walnut grips have nearly all of the piano finish intact and show only very minimal handling wear. The action functions perfectly. The case exterior is in good-very good condition with scattered, minor, handling and storage marks. The blue velvet interior is in excellent condition. The lining is not faded and wear is limited to some light stains on the case bottom from contact with the revolver cylinder and muzzle. All of the accessories remain in excellent condition. This is an excellent example of a rare, factory cased, deluxe engraved, Massachusetts Arms Co., Wesson & Leavitt Belt Revolver.
