Description:

Brightly blued octagonal barrels engraved at muzzles with lines and drapery, the top flats inscribed W. ABNETT, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY / WINDSOR, bottom flats mounted with swivel ramrods, finely scroll-engraved on each frame side, hammers engraved with eyes and fish scales, engraved top-straps and safeties, folding triggers, varnished checkered walnut grips mounted with German-silver bands and vacant escutcheon plates on butts; additional vacant silver escutcheon plates behind top-straps, with a mahogany case lined in deep green velvet with contoured partitions and containing a wood handled turn-screw (marked by Halgreaves, Smith & Co. Sheffield, fine cutlery and tool makers formed in 1859), pewter oil vessel, Eley’s Double Waterproof Percussion Caps (green label), Dixon & Sons bag-shaped powder flask 4/8 to 6/8 drams and 85-bore ball mold with sprue cutter William Abnett of Windsor worked from 1790 through 1837 at 104 Peascod Street. Rating Definition:

Fine retaining 60% of the original bright, high polish blue finish on the barrel with areas near the nipple exhibiting staining due to firing, some light marks and areas of light patina. The balance of the barrel, mostly the right side, has a dark grey patina. The grip has the expected light marks and crisp checkering. The relined case is fine with a cracked lid, a later replacement turn screw, powder flask with some patina and a broken spring, and mold with dark patina overall.
