A three gun English casing that consists of an engraved bar hammer pepperbox pistol and two engraved box lock screw barrel pistols. The box lock pistols are engraved: "SMITH/LONDON", and the set may have been made by Samuel and Charles Smith who were gunmakers in London from 1827-1875 and made both pepperbox and box lock pistols. The casing features a .40 caliber, six shot pepperbox with a 3 1/4 inch barrel cluster, engraved, German silver frame and highly figured European walnut grips and two engraved, percussion, 35 caliber, smoothbore pistols with 1 1/2 inch screw barrels and checkered walnut grips. The mahogany, English style, case is lined with green baize with eight compartments and a scalloped brass escutcheon inlaid in the lid. The case contains: (1) lacquer covered percussion cap tin, (2) small, copper powder flasks, (3) larger copper powder flask with embossed floral design, (4) polished steel oil bottle, (5) brass tip ramrod with ebony head, (6) single cavity iron bullet mold, (7) lead bullets, some spare parts and (8) loading tool. The pepperbox has a German silver frame, back strap with integral flat buttplate and elaborate cast trigger guard. The sides of the receiver, the trigger guard, buttcap and hammer are engraved with delicate English style scrollwork. The fluted barrel is engraved at the muzzle and stamped with British view and proof marks over each chamber. The pepperbox is not marked. The diminutive box lock pistols have sliding bar safeties, folding triggers, floral engraved receivers and hammers engraved with fanciful fish designs. The bag shaped grips have delicate skip checkering and a blue finish. British view and proof marks are stamped on the bottom of the chamber.

Very good. The barrel and hammer have a gray patina. The percussion nipples and surrounding portions of the barrel have moderate flash pitting. The German silver plated frame, trigger guard and butt cap are in fine condition. The two-piece grips are in very good condition with light to moderate handling wear and a gap between the grips and the buttcap. Both of the box lock pistols are in fine condition and retain 80-85% of the original blue finish. The engraving is crisp. The grips are fine overall with light handling marks. The case exterior is in fine condition with light handling and storage marks. The green baize lining is in very good condition with some fading and minor stains but no tears. The accessories show moderate wear and are very good overall. A scarce, high quality English combination three gun casing. Writer has not seen many of these.
