Description:

This Flobert action parlor pistol is marked "F. P. Caron, Arq. DE S.M. L' EMPEREUR A PARIS" on the top of the barrel. Caron was the gunmaker for Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (President/Emperor Napoleon III). After two failed coups and years in exile, Napoleon returned to France and was elected as the first president of the Second French Republic. He served from 1848 to 1852 and seized power as Emperor and reigned until 1870. Based on this history, this pistol was produced between 1852 and 1870. It has floral vine engraving on the barrel and most of the fittings. The barrel has a bead/post front sight and a notch rear sight. It is mounted with a carved European walnut stock with grooved grip, nickel trigger guard with spur, and nickel buttcap with finial. The left side of the barrel has a "rampant lion" stamp and the serial number. The pistol comes in hardwood case with blue velvet lined, French fitted interior with compartments and slots for various accessories and the pistol (accessories not included). The inside of the lid is marked: "CARON/ARQR. DE S.M. L'EMPEREUR/20 PASSAGE. DE L'OPERA/A PARIS."

Rating Definition:

Good as period refinished. The barrel and hammer retain much of the refinished finish with streaks of brown patina and some spots of pitting towards the muzzle (pitting is visible under the blue). The nickel fittings are mostly bright with some spotty oxidation. The grip is very good with only some slight scratches and handling/storage type marks, otherwise crisp carved designs and glossy surfaces. The action is fine. Most of the markings and designs are distinct. The case is very good with some minor storage type wear overall and some staining and slight tears on the interior.
