Description:

This set of brown leather pommel holsters have ornate bass endcaps with varying "rope" bands and silver Mexican style emblems with a Mexican golden eagle perched on a cactus and holding a snake in its beak and right talons. These emblems are styled similar to the Coat of Arms of Mexico used from 1821 through 1893: the eagles' wings are spread, and they face outward rather than to the left. The eagles head looks towards the viewer's right. The emblem used in 1893 to 1916 had the eagle facing to the viewer's left, the snake held in the eagle's left talons, and the wings pointed further upward. The strap is marked "LECKIE/LONDON" over a round "JOHN KENT/SOLE REPRESENTATIVE [partially unclear]/MEXICO CITY" stamp. John Leckie & Co. was established in 1849 and operated originally from Glasgow. An ad from 1916 promoted the company as an exporter of saddlery and other leather good with contracts with the British government, British colonies, and foreign governments. The company was known to conduct business around the world including in the U.S. and Central America. John Kent (born in England in 1832) operated a livery stable in Mexico City. The throats of the holsters have wooden pegs, and thus, best fit shorter barrelled handguns. This set is somewhat similar to the earlier "Para-Military" holsters shown on page 52 of Packing Iron.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The leather is surprisingly supple given the age and only exhibits minor wear. The stitching is mostly tight. The brass endcaps have an attractive lightly aged patina forming but remain mostly bright.
