Description:

This large Allen & Thurber pepperbox was produced in Worchester, Massachusetts, after 1847. The pepperbox is the standard Worchester style with a medium sized action and screwed on nipple shield with floral engraving patterns, wide barrel ribs, and trigger guard spur. The hammer is unmarked. The barrel group is marked "PATENTED 1837 CAST STEEL" on one of the raised ribs, and another rib has a "WORCHESTER" stamp and was also likely marked "ALLEN & THURBER" or "ALLEN & WHEELOCK". It is fitted with a pair of varnished walnut grips. The matching serial number "60" is marked on the mainspring and grip strap on the left, underside of both grip panels, and inside of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver has primarily a mixed gray-brown patina. Some traces of blue finish remain on the nipple shield. There are patches of light pitting and oxidation. The grips are fine with most of the varnish and some light scratches overall. The action is fine. Some of the markings are faded either from being poorly struck at the factory or from subsequent cleaning in period.
