Description:

Single Shot Breech-Loading Carbine (Split-Breech Carbine) that was manufactured by the Savage Revolving Arms Company under a sub-contract from Remington Arms Co., between 1865-1866. Remington delivered 5,000 .46 caliber Split Breech carbines to the Ordnance Department by June 30, 1865. Approximately 3,600 of these carbines were subsequently repurchased from the Ordnance Department by Remington and sold to France in 1870. The carbine has a 20-inch round barrel, chambered for the .46 rimfire cartridge. The barrel has a wide base iron front sight and a single leaf folding rear sight with 100, 200, and 500 yard notches. The left side of the receiver is fitted with a sling bar and ring. The stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "REMINGTON'S ILLION, N.Y./PAT. DEC.23, 1863 MAY 3 & NOV. 16, 1864" in two lines. The serial number, "5170" is stamped on the right front edge of the receiver and is covered by the forearm. The underside of the barrel is numbered "503". A script, two-initial, Ordnance inspection mark with oval border is stamped on the left stock wrist. Single letter ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the receiver and the underside of the barrel. The barrel has a dull, military blue finish. The barrel band, receiver, trigger guard, breech block, and butt plate are color casehardened. The sling bar and ring are bright. The stock and forearm have been varnished.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine retains about 85% of the original blue and 70% plus color casehardened finish and shows primarily storage wear. The forearm and stock have been revarnished and are in good overall condition. The Ordnance inspection mark on the left wrist is partially legible. This is an attractive example of a scarce Civil War carbine.
