Description:

34 inches overall, with a 24 1/2 inch double edged single-fuller blade with patriotic/Medical Staff themed etching and no visible maker's marks. The hilt is brass, with cast-in leaf and floral motifs, "MS" over 13 stars on the languet, and an American Eagle on the grip. With a brass hilt, decorated with star and leaf motifs, and numbered "79" on multiple components. Included with the sword are two large documents; the first being a muster roll for Company D of the 68th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment, (which notes an "E.E. Andrews" as the company surgeon), and a medical degree dated 18 Feb 1860 from a Philadelphia medical school to Andrews. Originally mustered in as the 4th Missouri Regiment of Colored Infantry in late 1863, the unit was federalized as the 68th U.S. Regiment in March of 1864. During the war, the unit would face off against Confederate cavalry General Nathan Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Tupelo, besiege and participate in the siege and battle of Fort Blakely, which would be the last major battle of the Civil War. The 68th would then spend the rest of their service time patrolling the Rio Grande in Texas before mustering out in 1866.

Rating Definition:

Good as period repaired, with a mended break about halfway up the blade, mild spotting, and scattered handling marks. The brass components are very good, with a mixed aged patina, and light handling marks.
