Description:

Excellent example of a Maynard Second Model Carbines manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company between 1863 and 1865. This carbine has a military blue 20 inch .50 caliber part round/part octagon barrel. The receiver, lever and buttplate are color casehardened. The hammer is niter blue. The stock is oil-finished American walnut. The barrel is fitted with a wide base iron front sight and folding two-leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." The opposite side of the receiver is marked: "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6. 1859". The serial number, 20314", is located on the bottom of the receiver tang. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with an Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of two script initials surrounded by a rectangular border. Small one and two letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The Second Model Maynard Carbine was widely issued to federal cavalry regiments during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine is all original and retains 97% of the blue and 90% plus color casehardened finish. The stock is in excellent plus condition with sharp Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks. This is a top condition example of an important Civil War cavalry carbine that would be difficult to improve upon.
