Description:

This is an example of one of the transitional Joslyn breechloading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department from the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. It has the Model 1862 style lock plate and the Model 1864 style breech and fittings. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight. The lock plate is marked: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON/ CONN" ahead of the hammer. The rear of the breechblock is marked with the three line 1861 and 1862 patent dates, and the matching serial numbers are located on the top of the breechblock and on the upper tang. It is mounted with a straight grip walnut stock with a "US" marked buttplate. The stock has two crisp cartouches on the left flat and "FDL" ahead of the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially restored with 75% of the original blue finish remaining on the barrel with a few scratches and a brown patina on the exposed surfaces. The buttplate, action, and breech all retain nearly all of the professionally refurbished case colors. The reoiled stock is very good with some bruising and scrapes on the right side of the forend and a slight crack ahead of the buttplate tang on the right side of the butt. The cartouches and markings are crisp. This is an attractive Joslyn carbine that would be a solid representative example in most collections. Most of these carbines saw hard use during the war.
