Description:

The Burnside Rifle Company as subcontractors manufactured 34,000 Spencer carbines circa 1865. The carbine is fitted with the distinctive 3-groove rifled barrel, forearm with single barrel band, and lug blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The casehardened frame is marked with the model and four-line address on the top near the breech and the serial number at the rear. It is not fitted with the Stabler magazine cutoff. The left side barrel flat is marked "J.L.C." Most components have single letter sub-inspection marks. It is fitted with a saddle ring and bar, straight grip walnut stock and forearm with a single sling swivel on the bottom of the butt and a smooth buttplate with a removable tube magazine. An inspectors cartouche is marked to the rear of the sling bar on the left. "&" is marked on the top of the breechblock (replacement). Included with the carbine are two original Spencer 1865 action components including a breechblock.

Rating Definition:

Very good as fitted with some replacement parts (original breechblock components included). The barrel retains 20% of the original blue and has a brown patina on the balance. The action has remnants of the case colors underneath speckled oxidation. The replacement hammer has particularly vivid case colors. The wood is good as re-oiled with some bruising and scrapes and a hairline crack on the left side of the butt. The action is very good, and the marking are mostly crisp.
