Description:

Only about 500 Model 1862 Army Type carbines were manufactured between 1862 and 1865; approximately 200 were ordered by the U.S. Army. This example has standard receiver markings including the serial number on the upper tang. The Army Type differs from the Navy Type in that it lacks the screws and screw holes in the breech end of the barrel for retaining the leather covering. It has a floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the receiver, blade front and adjustable rear sights, and is mounted with a straight grip stock with a sling swivel and brass buttplate. Included with the rifle are copies of documents from the National Archives concerning the service of George B. Slocum of S Company in the 11 New York Cavalry. Within one document George B. Slocum is identified as having been issued carbine number 2393. A later document lists that he retained a carbine and other weapons when he mustered out in September 1865. Among the many other documents is a consent form signed by his father Philip C. Slocum giving permission for his nineteen year old son to fight for the Union. During the war as much as 20% of the soldiers were under the age of 18 which was considered to be the minimum recruitment age in the North. Young men from 18 to 20 years old required parental permission to enlist in most parts of the North but this was often overlooked or forged. Other young men joined as musicians (considered non-combatants) and armed themselves when the fighting began. The Confederacy had no such age requirements.

Rating Definition:

Fair as period refinished. The barrel has a brown patina with some dings, nicks, and scratches along with areas of oxidation. The action has retains 25% plus of a blue finish with areas of light pitting and oxidation. The markings on the action are partially obscured. The stock is fine with some scratches, pressure marks, ding, and what looks to be a hand carved "H". The action is fine.
