Description:

Wesson & Leavitt Belt Model revolver manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co., of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, c. 1851-1857. The revolver has a four-inch round barrel with .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder. The cylinder is finished bright with decorative etchings and dry needle highlights. The barrel is blued and the top strap, frame, hammer are trigger guard and color casehardened. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. The frame, trigger guard, side-plate and hammer are decorated with high quality open scroll engraving on a punch-dot, lined or cross-hatch background with the guard inscribed "Bartlett". The top strap is roll-stamped: "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" in two lines. The revolver is accompanied by a tiger stripe maple case with five compartments lined with red velvet. The case contains: (1) brass ramrod, (2) blued, L-shaped screw-driver/nipple wrench, (3) bow-leg brass bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets marked "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS on the right block, (4) ebony cap holder, (5) Eagle pocket pistol flask with fixed charger embossed on one side with "MASSACHUSETTS ARMS COMPANY CHICOPEE FALLS MASSACHUSETTS", (6) key and (7) engineer's straight edge with leather case etched: "Ralph W. Bartlett" in Old English letters on one side.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver retains 98% plus of the blue and casehardened finish and appears to be unfired. There is no flash pitting on the cylinder or percussion nipples. The cylinder has nearly all of the bright finish and acid-etched decoration intact. The top strap, frame, hammer and trigger guard have strong case colors and the well-executed scroll engraving is sharp. The back strap has a dark mustard patina. The two-piece walnut grips are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the varnish finish. The action is tight and functions perfectly. The tiger stripe maple case exterior is in excellent condition with light handling and storage wear. The interior is in very fine overall condition. The lining is slightly faded and has compression marks and grease stains from contact with the revolver. The powder flask is in excellent condition and retains nearly all of the brown lacquer and gold plated finish. The bullet mold has a good-looking patina and remains in very good condition with a few spots of age discoloration. The ramrod, screw-driver and ebony cap box are in fine condition. The engineer's straight edge is in excellent condition with crisp etching on the blade. This is an excellent example of a cased and factory engraved Wesson & Leavitt Belt Revolver manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co.
