Description:

Manufactured in 1863. A block "E" is stamped next to the matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap which indicates the components were designated by Colt for special finish or engraving. The revolver is engraved with flowing Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The sides of the trigger are engraved with a detailed wolf head motif. This engraving is generally associated with Gustave Young, but the style was also utilized by a number of engravers employed by Colt during this period. The revolver is fitted with two-piece grips; the left grip has a relief carved Eagle and Shield under a ribbon carved with "E. PLURIBUS UNUM". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO." The left rear trigger guard bow is stamped "36 CAL". All of the visible serial numbers match. The barrel and cylinder are blued. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened, and the trigger guard and back strap are silverplated. The revolver is complete with a mahogany American style case with five compartments lined with dark green velvet. The case contains: (1) an empty Goldmarks percussion cap tin, (2) several .36 lead balls and conical bullets, (3) a brass plated powder flask with fixed charger embossed with crossed revolvers, stars, crossed flags, and a cannon on both sides, and (4) blued double cavity bullet mold stamped "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished. The revolver retains 30% of the blue finish The rebrowned cylinder has a smooth gray patina and retains about 75% of the roll-engraved naval scene. The cylinder pins are battered, and the percussion nipples have moderate flash pitting. The sides of the hammer show slight flash pitting. The trigger guard and back strap have been replated. The intricate Germanic scrollwork is crisp. The grips are good overall, with non-factory custom relief carving. There is a dark patina around the edges of the grips and the relief carving. The left side of the grip has a small chip at the heel and at the junction with the frame and back strap. There is a long hairline crack on the right side of the grip, and the usual age cracks on the butt. The revolver action is tight and functions well. The case exterior is in very good condition with a few very minor handling marks. The relined interior is in good condition. The lining is bright, clean and unfaded. There is a compression mark in the case bottom from contact with the revolver cylinder and some minor rips in the lining on the side of the case from contact with the hammer and front sight. The cap tin is in fair condition. The flask has been relacquared and is in good condition. The bullet mold shows moderate-heavy wear with patches of pitting and is in fair condition. This is a nice example of a factory engraved Civil War Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver with relief carved grip complete with case and accessories.
