Description:

This pair of cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolvers, serial numbers 105633 and 105635, (two numbers apart, a true pair!) were manufactured circa 1855. The revolvers have five-shot cylinders that are roll-engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT". The top of each revolver barrel is hand engraved with the presentation legend which consists of "SAML COLT" in Old English letters surrounded by engraved double line flourishes. "COLTS/PATENT" is hand engraved in an upward curve on the left side of each frame. The full serial numbers are stamped on the barrel lugs, frames, trigger guards, back straps, and cylinders, and the loading levers are stamped with the partial serial numbers. The punch-mark stamped above or below the serial numbers on the barrel lugs, frames, trigger guards, and back straps indicates those components were designated by Colt for engraving or special finish. Both revolvers are engraved with Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. Animal heads are concealed in the scrollwork on the left side of the barrel lugs, and the sides of the hammers are engraved with a wolf head motif. Concealed animal heads and the wolf head motif are usually associated with Colt factory engraving executed by Gustave Young. The revolver barrels and cylinders are blued. The loading levers, frames and hammers are color casehardened, and the brass frames and trigger guards are silver plated. Each revolver has a one-piece grip. The revolvers are in a brass bound oak or mahogany case lined with crimson velvet. The case has eight compartments and contains: (1) 250 count tin of Eley percussion caps, (2) two packets of Hazard's combustible cartridges for Colt pocket pistols, (3) L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, (4) powder flask with fixed charger and eagle and shield embossing on one side, (5) blued straight leg double cavity bullet mold marked "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines on the sprue cutter, (6) and key.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. About 20% of the original blue and casehardened finish remains. It has some spots of light pitting on the left side of the barrel. The cylinder has a silver-gray patina and retain nearly the entire stagecoach holdup scene. The cylinder has flash pitting on the nipples, and the safety pins are battered. The trigger guard and backs trap retain about 60% of the silver plated finish. The grip is in good condition but has shrunk away from the back strap and has a deep yellow patina. The action need some work; the cylinder will not turn when the hammer is cocked, and the hammer will not hold on half cock. The relined case is in good overall condition with moderate handling wear and a crack that extends across 3/4 of the lid. The velvet interior is dusty and has compression marks from the revolver cylinders. The bullet mold is in excellent condition and retains nearly all of the original dull blue finish. The flask and cartridge packets are in good-very good condition, and the combination tool and cap tin show more handling wear. This is a nice pair of cased Gustave Young factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 30% of the blue and casehardened finishes remain. The cylinder has a silver-gray patina and a distinct scene. It has some flash pitting and complete safety pins. 40% of the silver plated finish remains. The grip is cream colored and has some hairline age cracks on the butt. It is mechanically fine.
