Description:

The Model 1871-1872 Open Top was the first Colt model manufactured specifically for metallic cartridges. Colt manufactured approximately 7,000 of these revolvers in 1872 and 1873. The majority of the components were newly manufactured, but some components were left over from prior percussion models. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --". The left side of the frame is marked with the 1871 and 1872 patent dates. The cylinder has the Texas naval scene. The assembly number "1562" is on the loading gate, and the matching serial number is on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and cylinder (partial). It has a blade front sight and a notch at the breech end of the barrel for a rear sight. It is fitted with "one piece" style smooth grips. The majority of these revolvers saw hard use and thus surviving examples are difficult to obtain. This design was rejected by the U.S. Army in 1872 because they desired a stronger frame and more powerful cartridge than the .44 Henry flat. As a result, William Mason worked to create what became the .45 Colt Model 1873 better known as the Single Action Army.

Rating Definition:

Fine as professionally replated. The revolver retains 98% plus of the nickel plated finish with some minor scratches and marks from handling/storage, a few small spots of oxidation and pitting, and a drag line on the cylinder. The markings have mostly been re-engraved with the patent dates not and are light. The replacement grips are very good as repaired. The left panel has a repair at the junction with the frame, and both are slightly undersized and display age cracks. The action is excellent, and the markings are crisp.
