Description:

This revolver's serial number dates to 1848. It has the two line New York City address on top of the barrel, the Indian fight scene on the cylinder, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, matching serial numbers, a one piece walnut grip, and "Charles H. Ross" inscribed on the back strap. Charles Henry Ross (1842-1897) was an English author and artist who wrote and illustrated humorous stories in novels, books, and "penny dreadfuls." He sometimes wrote under pseudonyms such as "Boswell Butt, Esq." Given the lack of British proofmarks, the revolver could have also been inscribed to one of the several men by the name Charles H. Ross in the U.S. during the mid 19th century. Men bearing the name served in various Civil War units including the 5th Regiment of New York Infantry, 16th Regiment of Maine Infantry, 35th Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry, and many others. The revolver comes in a later hardwood case with a cleaning rod, combination bullet seater and screwdriver, powder flask, Colt's patent dual cavity bullet mold, and several lead bullets. Also included is a Federal Reserve Bank bag.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished, remarked, and fitted with replacement parts. The revolver retains 98% plus of the blue finish, case colors, and silver plating. An aged patina has formed on the silver, and there are some spots of slight pitting showing on the cylinder. The wedge is a replacement without a retaining spring but is numbered to match and is loose. The cylinder retains all of the safety pins. The grip is very good with some minor handling wear and a slight crack on the upper left and a chip on the left toe. The action functions fine. The case is very good as relined with the lock plate absent, moderate exterior storage wear, and staining and fading on the interior lining. The accessories are fine overall.
