Description:

The First Model Hotchkiss rifles and carbines are easily identified by the turning magazine cutoff behind the bolt handle on the right side of the stock. Interestingly, this carbine was manufactured in 1879 and has the turning cuttoff and appropriate 24 inch barrel, but it is also fitted with a Second Model style nickel forend cap with a compartment for the included two-piece cleaning rod. The front sight is a pinned blade, and the rear sight is a folding ladder graduated 1-4 on the base and 5-11 on the ladder. The left side of the barrel at the breech has the "V/P/eagle head" proofs under "US". The left side of the receiver is marked with the three-line Winchester and Hotchkiss patent information and address and has the serial number at the rear. The bolt and bolt handle have "HN" inspection marks.

Rating Definition:

Good as partially refinished. The rear of the barrel and front of the receiver have an applied blue finish while the remaining surfaces have a gray patina with some spotting. The stock is fair with some faint cracks near the saddle ring stud and otherwise only a few minor scrapes. The action is needs some work. The markings are clear.
