This Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle is dated 1869 on the breechblock which is also marked "eagle head/crossed arrows/U.S." The lock plate is marked with the standard Springfield markings including "1863" at the tail. The left side of the barrel and receiver have the matching serial number. The barrel is fitted with "U" marked barrel bands marked and has a fixed front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to "9". It is mounted with a nearly full length walnut stock with a "U.S." marked buttplate and the correct two-piece trigger guard. Sling swivels are mounted to the front band and front of the trigger guard. The left stock flat has three inspection cartouches (one is "ESA") and an "8". It includes an original cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle has primarily a crisp gray patina with some brighter areas, patches of minor spotting, and darker blue/brown tones on the lock and hammer. There is some slight pitting. The reoiled wood is very good with a few dents and minor scratches from use along with some chipping at some of the edges. The cartouches are faint but legible. The action is excellent, and the markings are generally crisp.
