Description:

This is a very fine example of a very scarce Navy contract Model 1885 Remington-Lee bolt action rifle. There were approximately 1,500 made for the Navy contract. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S.N./naval anchor/No. 2702 / W.W.K." The latter marking is the inspector stamp of Lt. W.W. Kimball. The left top flat of the receiver is marked with the standard two line markings of " REMINGTON ARMS CO./ILLION N.Y. U.S.A./ SOLE MANUFACTURERS & AGENTS" followed by the serial number "51876". The left side rear has an "H" in a start stamp, and the left side at center is marked "PATENTED NOV. 4TJ 1879". It has a standard length round barrel fitted with a 1879 Springfield rear sight graduated from 100-500 yards on the side of the base and 600-1,200 yards on the ladder, and a military blade/bayonet stud front sight. It has a standard full length straight grip walnut stock stamped with 1/2 inch high letters of "N.G.H." on the left side of the buttstock. It is complete with an original magazine with two grooves on the side and a slotted cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The barrel bands, trigger guard, and buttplate retain 75% of the original blued finish with some thinning to a brown patina. There is some wear on the muzzle area from a bayonet and a couple of dark brown spots in front of the rear sight. There are some scattered minor dings and scratches from use. The receiver retains about 50% of the blued finish and has a thin brown patina on the exposed areas. The stock is excellent with only minor handling marks and light scratches in some areas. The action is fine, and most of the markings are clear aside from the lower line of the Remington address/agents marking.
