James Paris Lee was the inventor of this early straight pull bolt action rife. Winchester was granted rights to produced them for the United Stated Navy in the mid-late 1890s and also produced some sporting versions. These rifles saw heavy use by the Navy and Marine Corps during the Spanish-American War in Cuba and Puerto Rico and also in the Boxer Rebellion, Filipino Insurrection, and Moro Rebellion. The chamber is marked "-U.S.N.- /[anchor]/No 18268/-J.N.J.-", and the left side of the receiver is marked with the two-line address/patent dates marking. It is equipped with a blade front sight and a ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The rear barrel band is marked "U". Sling swivel studs are mounted to the barrel bands and butt. It is mounted with a hand guard and nearly full length semi-pistol grip stock with a buttplate that has a compartment.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle retains 50% of the faded thin original blue finish and has a dark brown patina form. There are scratches and marks and some areas of minor wear. The reoiled, lightly sanded stock and handguard are very good with dark oiled surfaces with some minor wear on the front of the forend and otherwise interspersed with only a few minor scrapes and dings. The buttplate is slightly oversize. The action is excellent, and the markings are crisp.
