Description:

It is generally accepted that martially marked examples such as this were manufactured at Springfield Armory. This carbine was manufactured in 1880; the serial number falls 2,295 units before the commonly listed Second Model range. It also has a First Model length barrel. The carbine has a blue finish, bright bolt, pinned front sight, and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,400 yards. It has the standard markings and is mounted with a smooth straight grip half stock with a circled script "P" behind the trigger guard, a boxed "SWP/1880" cartouche on the left, single barrel band, German silver forend cap with compartment, saddle ring stud on the left side, and steel carbine buttplate. Over thirty "TFG" stamps scattered throughout.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The metal surfaces retains 40% of the thinning original blue finish. There is some spotting and minor marks, and the bolt has a gray patina. The reoiled wood is very good with several minor scratches and pressure marks. It is mechanically fine and has crisp markings.
