This rifle musket was one of 11,495 manufactured under contract by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton of the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Co. in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1863 and 1864. It features a fixed front sight and a two leaf folding rear sight. The barrel is secured by three "U" marked barrel bands. The barrel is marked "1863" at the breech on the top flat and with "V/P/Eagle Head" proofs and inspection marks on the upper left barrel flat over "JH" on the left flat. The lock is marked with the "Eagle" motif and "U.S./TRENTON" ahead of the hammer and is dated "1864" at the tail. It is fitted with a smooth oiled walnut stock with "FWS" and "ESA" cartouches on the left flat, "JB" stamped by the tail of the trigger guard tang, and a "US" marked buttplate. It has a trumpet head iron ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surface have a primarily gray patina with some light brown forming and scattered minor marks. The wood is very fine with crisp cartouches, sharp edges and has several small dings concentrated primarily on the left side of the butt, scattered scratches, and some slight chips. The lock functions fine, and the markings throughout are clear.
