Description:

There were only 5,000 total of these rifles produced circa 1865. This example was possibly shortened for cadet use. These first Allin conversions retained the original 58 caliber percussion barrel and were chambered in a "58 RF" cartridge. It has a rack and pinion/spring loaded extractor/ejector assembly. The lock plate is marked "1863" behind the hammer and has the Springfield Armory eagle motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" marked ahead of the hammer. It has a bayonet stud/blade front sight, unmarked socket bayonet (does not fit), folding leaf rear sight, and is fitted a nearly full length walnut stock secured by two barrel bands and fitted with a bright forend cap and standard "U.S." buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fair as altered/assembled. The metal surfaces are mostly bright with some spots of light pitting and spotting, numerous light scratches, a gray patina on the breech, and small nicks especially on the lock. The bayonet is pitted but partially bright. The heavily sanded stock is poor with some minor cracks, chips, scrapes, and dings. It is mechanically fine and has crisp markings.
