Description:

Manufactured circa 1850s, this Allen percussion target pistol had a limited production run and shows high standard American craftsmanship for the period. Specimens are known to be marked Allen Thurber, Allen & Thurber and Allen & Wheelock with this example marked "No. 2/ALLEN & WHEELOCK CAST-STEEL/WORCESTER" flanked by eagles. The markings are stamped on the top barrel flat. The frame, breech plug, spur trigger, hammer and flat grip cap feature factory scroll engraving. The barrel has provisions for the factory false muzzle that accompanies the pistol. The pistol sights are peep and tube and the false muzzle has a ball sight blocking post. Equipped with a single set trigger. A wooden ramrod with horn tip is beneath the barrel. Fitted with checkered two-piece grips. The nicely figured attachable straight grip stock features scroll engraved German silver hardware which includes the patch box and initial oval (left side of the stock), a crescent casehardened buttplate and wrist checkering. The partitioned case is lined in red velvet and has ten compartments for the pistol, stock and accessories. The accessories include a brass bullet starter, double face floral powder flask, single cavity brass bullet mold, wad cutter, and Eley Brothers percussion cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The barrel retains 70% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The remaining metal surfaces retain 40% of the original case colors in and around the protected areas, otherwise faded to a gray. Some minor pitting is present. The grip panels are very good as they are undersized at the bottom and show some minor handling marks with some scattered blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically fine. The stock is very fine with a couple hairline stress cracks along the grain and some minor handling marks. Overall, the checkering remains crisp. The buttplate has faded to a gray. The silver is fine. The case is good with worn and faded lining, cracked lid, detached lock escutcheon and a number of handling/storage marks. Overall, a fine and scarce cased percussion target pistol with attachable stock perfect for an Allen or American percussion arms collector.
