Description:

Produced by an unknown maker, the push dagger was a common defensive weapon in 19th century America, being compact enough to conceal in a boot, coat sleeve, or similar garment, and useable by anyone with enough coordination to throw a punch. They were made popular by riverboat gamblers in the mid-19th century and also in the coastal cities such as San Francisco. Measuring 7 1/4 inches overall, with a 4 1/2 inch double-edged spear point blade. The blade shows a lozenge cross-section overall, and is decorated on one ricasso with an engraved letter "D" and on the other with a floral bloom. In the center of the flower is a small indentation, possibly for a spring loaded ball detent or similar retention device. Fitted with a smoot hardwood four-fingered grip, with a brass ferrule and a full-length tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good with areas of heavy brown spotting and scattered pitting, along with areas of brown patina, some mild edge wear and a light roll of the tip. The grip is also very good with some scratches and varnish loss.
