Description:

Second Model Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Single Action revolver manufactured circa 1878. The revolver has the early open top frame with square butt and scoop flute cylinder. The revolver has two-piece, black checkered, hard rubber grips and the butt is fitted with the standard lanyard ring. The barrel, cylinder, and frame are nickel-plated and the hammer, trigger cylinder latch and trigger guard are color case-hardened. The hammer spur has coarse, border-less knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MERWIN HULBERT & Co. NEW YORK, U.S.A." followed by the 1874-1877 patent dates in one line. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "THE HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A." in one line. "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1872" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame below the cylinder. The serial number "10785" is stamped on the butt behind the lanyard loop and the assembly number "485" is stamped on the inside of the barrel lug and the rear face of the cylinder.

Rating Definition:

Near new. The revolver retains 98% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. Wear is limited to a few very minor storage marks and a 1/4 inch patch of flaking on the top of the back-strap at the junction with the left grip. The hammer, trigger, trigger guard and cylinder latch retain 97% of the color case-hardened finish with strong case colors. The black hard rubber grips are in excellent condition and show almost no wear. The bore is mirror bright and the action functions perfectly. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. This is an exceptional example of a very desirable Merwin, Hulbert & Co., Large Frame, Open Top, Single Action revolver.
