Manufactured circa 1876 into the 1880s, this Merwin Hulbert & Co. Pocket Army single action revolver features a round barrel, fluted cylinder and bird's head butt. The revolver is profusely engraved with the distinctive Merwin Hulbert & Co. style with a round panel on the left side of the frame which features Hermes. The left side of the frame under the cylinder is marked "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER" followed by "1873" and the right side of the frame is marked "MERWIN HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY". The left side of the barrel has the two-line address/patent date marking. The top of the barrel is engraved "FROM. D. BEHMER" and the back strap is engraved "TO E.P. COLGAN SHERIFF/Dec. 25 1887". The barrel, frame sides, cylinder flats and top of the back strap feature a fine floral/floral vine and punch dot engraving. The left rear of the frame has a geometric design. A punch dot scroll pattern is engraved on the sliding loading gate. The serial number "2725" is stamped near the butt. The rear face of the cylinder is marked "2926". The rear of the barrel lug appears to be marked "292", however writer is unable to remove the barrel/cylinder to see it clearly and the left side of the frame under the grip is marked "292". Nickel finish with casehardened hammer, trigger guard and trigger and fitted with smooth pearl grips. Writer was able to find some information on a "Sheriff E.P. Colgan and Posse" circa 1888 with one black & white photograph from Sonoma County, California. The internet information was only about the photograph itself, place taken, time period, still image, etc.

Very good. The revolver retains 50% original nickel finish with a smooth dark patina on the balance. There is some pitting on the butt. The hammer retains much of the dull original case colors and the trigger guard has a smooth dark patina. The left grip panel is very good and the right panel is incomplete and has a large chip absent at the bottom and a small chip at the top. The action needs work, the cylinder does not rotate when the hammer is cocked. The markings and engraving are clear.
