Description:

According to the included factory letters, this outstanding consecutive pair of Colt revolvers was sold to The Lee Hardware Company in Salina, Kansas, and shipped to the Midwest Sports Shop in Wichita, Kansas, on April 6, 1956. Lee Hardware Company was founded in Salina, Kansas, by Heny David Lee who also established his well known clothing company (now Lee Jeans) and several other businesses in the same town. Given the shipping date it is clear that these revolvers were manufactured early in the first year of Second Generation production. In Wilkerson's book The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver the author states on page 103 that the earliest known consecutive set did not appear until the 3000 serial number range, making this previously undiscovered set certainly the earliest known, if not the first consecutive set. The letter indicates the factory records were still using the old pre-war style "38/c" caliber listing at that time whereas they later switched to designating the specific caliber. The barrels are both marked "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .38 SPECIAL" on the left and "COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." on top. The left sides of the frames have the two line, three date patent information and the Rampant Colt emblem. They are fitted with checkered Rampant Colt emblem grips and have matching serial numbers. The consecutive assembly numbers are marked on the loading gates and right rear of the frames. They have the standard blade and frame groove sights, blue and casehardened finish, and "high" hammers with polished sides (standard from 1956 to mid-1959 and on those after 1972). According to the data discussed in The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver, 1955-1975, 6,506 Second Generation SAA revolvers were produced in this configuration. Each revolver includes a matching Colt black box that is hand numbered to the gun, original factory papers, and a bore brush.

Rating Definition:

Near new in box. The revolver displays only light handling marks and slight marks on the cylinder stops. The box is very fine with some edge wear. The significance of these remarkable Colts should not be ignored as they are possibly the very first "Consecutive-Set" ever sold by Colt after World War II and are certainly worthy of the most advanced Colt collection or astute investment buyer.
