Description:

Predating the rise of the Nazi party, the knife of the State Forest Service (Staatsforstdienst) served as a badge of honor and rank, with white colored grips reserved for senior officials and Foresters. Unlike many organizations that were co-opted by the Nazis, the symbols of the Forest Service were not significantly altered, and as a result very few Forester's knives are found with overt Nazi symbols or regalia. The German Hunting Association, meanwhile, became one of Hermann Goering's pet projects, with a Stag of St. Hubertus defaced with a swastika serving as their icon. Measuring 17 1/2inches overall, the blade is a "rosebud" Damascus pattern, 12 5/8 inches in length with a gold washed "armed squirrel" Eickhorn logo on the left ricasso and "Echt/Damast" ("real Damascus", traditionally reserved for proper German "pattern weld" Damascus as opposed to roll-stamped patterns) on the spine, and gold and niter blue accented vinework and oak leaves on the spine and sides. The right side has an etched scene of a hunter aiming at a fleeing stag and doe with a design of a pair of crossed rifles behind a target at the base, and the left is banner-marked "Ehrengeschenk des Allgemeinen Deutschen Jagdschutz-Vereins" (honor present from the National German Hunting Association). The hilt is gilt brass construction, with a prominent Hubertus Stag on the languet, a deer hoof rear quillion, cast-in oak leaf designs and game scenes, and a pair of ivory pattern grips with gilt acorn decoration. With a brown leather sheath, decorated with oak patterns on the gilt brass hardware, and fitted with a pocket for a small field knife (not included).

Rating Definition:

Very good as professionally restored with fine Damascus patterns and strong gold and blue finish on the blade, 90% plus gilt finish on the hilt, 80% on the sheath fittings, and some mild scuffs on the sheath.
