Description:

Removing the lock of this pistol reveals the marking "Marco Antonio" followed by what appears to be "Covino" on the lower section of the lock interior; the latter marking is partially obscured by the tumbler. The name and ring shaped cock jaw screw suggest Spanish or Italian manufacture. The snaphance was introduced in the mid 16th century and was replaced by miquelet lock and true flintlock firearms in most of Europe by the late 17th century. It remained in use in Northern Italy into the mid 18th century. The only marking on the barrel is a floral design on the upper left flat at the breech. The ornate lock has a bird head on the frizzen arm, a face on the cock screw and a mythical anthropomorphic creature below the pan along with scroll designs. Coordinating scroll designs and light borders are on the buttcap, thumb piece, and side plate. The buttcap also has a silver stud with an engraved face. Additional detailing includes the pigtail trigger and carved designs on the stock around the breech, flats, and forend. The pistol includes a wooden ramrod with horn tip and a patch puller.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel and lock remain mostly bright with some light spotting and pitting. The brass furniture has a mostly lightly aged patina. The wood is also good with a chip absent at the front of the lock and some small dents. The action is fine and the markings and designs are crisp.
