Description:

This Third Model Brown Bess flintlock musket has a bright smoothbore barrel with a bayonet stud front sight and some small stamps at the breech including two proofmarks. The brass side plate is marked "4 PA 7) N 3524", and the left flat has the same markings along with "1833" and "1853". Additional numeric and small letter markings are on the left side of the butt. The lock is marked "TOWER" vertically at the tail and has the large "crown/GR" marking and a government broad arrow mark below the removable iron flash pan. "3524" is marked on the front of the lock partially obscured by the frizzen spring. It is mounted on a nearly full length walnut stock with brass furniture and sling swivels on the forend and front of the trigger guard. A trumpet head iron ramrod is included. The British military continued to use variants of the Brown Bess flintlock muskets well into the 19th century even as percussion rifles proved to be more effective and did not fully replace smoothbore muskets with rifles until the late 19th century.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The iron surfaces are mostly bright with some gray patina, light spotting, and slight pitting. The brass fittings have an aged patina. The trigger has a brown patina and oxidation. The stock is fine with some small insect type holes, a few dents, various light scrapes, and a few gouges. The action is excellent. This is a nice brown bess flintlock musket that likely saw use in the first part of Britain's "Imperial Century" (1815-1914).
