Description:

This contemporary musket is a copy of a 17th century style doglock musket similar to those used by the British Army into the early 18th century and still used in the colonies for many decades thereafter. The dog catch at the back of the cock holds the hammer securely in half cock for safe reloading. The half cock safety notch on the true flintlock action made this safety method obsolete even though the dog is generally more secure. The lock is marked "E/NICHOLSON" at the tail end and has a "crown/AR" stamp in between two "crown/broad arrow" stamps at the center. It has a nearly full length stock and a bayonet stud front sight.

Rating Definition:

Fine as custom made. The musket retains 85% of the rust brown finish with some patches of gray patina, oxidation, and minor pitting. The brass buttplate remains bright. The wood is excellent with only minor handling and storage marks aside from small scrape above the dog. The action is fine, and the markings are crisp.
