Description:

Manufactured by a "J. Stewart" in 1987, this is a fine reproduction of the Civil War-era Whitworth breechloader. Designed by Englishman Sir Joseph Whitworth (of Whitworth Rife fame), the Whitworth cannon was significantly ahead of its time, with a screw-threaded breech for loading and terrifying accuracy; accounts from the era attribute a Whitworth putting a 10-round group at 1,500 meters with only 5 inches of lateral deviation. This model excludes the hexagonal rifling in favor of a smooth bore and scales down the bore to 1.11 inches. The maker's mark is present on the left trunnion, and a percussion nipple and hinged striker are mounted at the breech. Included with the gun is a matching scaled carriage, 24 1/2 inches tall at the wheel and 36 inches across the axle, barrel swab, two-piece rammer, black powder charts, a length of cannon fuse and a custom bullet mold for making mini-style bullets (17 examples included).

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom made with 90% of the black finish showing some light handling marks overall. The carriage is in similar condition. The breech hinge, screw assembly and striker all appear in good working order.
