Description:

This interesting carbine was produced circa the 1820s and has a 14 3/4 screw off barrel that is fitted to a 4 1/18 inch octagonal breech section engraved with spire style designs and marked with "PUIFORCRAT A PARIS" and inlaid with gold proofmarks. The lock has an unclear maker's mark that is likely "Boutet A Paris" given the style of the visible "B" and "P". Both Boutet and Puiforcrat were active in the early 19th century until the early 1830s. It is mounted on a semi-pistol grip half stock with "fish head" style design at the end of the wrist and iron furniture including a long belt clip on the left flat. A ramrod head is visible at the front of the forend. This rod passes deep into the stock and is the appropriate length.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Traces of the blue finish and half of the original gold inlay remains. The balance is primarily a mottled gray patina with some mild pitting and light oxidation. The refinished lock shows signs of repairs/modification behind the cock. The wood is very good and has various small dings and scratches along with a some signs of repairs and hairline cracks. The lock functions fine. The barrel marking and designs are crisp, but the lock marking is faint as noted.
