Description:

This Prussian jaeger rifle is marked "V. CHR. SCHILLING IN SUHL" (Valtin Christian Schilling) on the top flat behind the elevation adjustable rear sight. The front sight is a dovetailed blade. Similarly marked rifles have been dated to 1842. It has Germanic floral scroll engraving on the lock and furniture and is equipped with a set of double set triggers inside a trigger guard with grip extension. The stock has a wooden patch box, checkered wrist, horn forend, floral scroll carving behind the cheekpiece on the left, an ebony insert in the forend, and a flat buttplate. Included with the rifle is a metal ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a faded brown finish mixed with a brown patina and some spotting. The other components have a mixture of brown and gray patina with some areas of minor spotting and slight pitting. The lengthened stock (diagonal dark wood band in forend) is also very good with a variety of scrapes and dings and sharp checkering and carving. The action is fine. The engraving and markings are mostly clear.
