Description:

The unique flintlock musket has a large bore (approximately .90 caliber) barrel that has an octagonal breech section preceded by two series of false bands and a ornate brass muzzle piece in the shape of a lion's head. It has a full length European walnut stock with heavy butt and a ram's head carving on the comb. The butt is half covered with a pinned iron buttplate. There are no visible markings, but the overall style suggests it was made in one of the German principalities circa the 17th century. Its short, stout build is reminiscent of later German Jaeger rifles which inspired the creation of the iconic American Long Rifle.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron surfaces have brown patina, oxidation, and light pitting. The brass is partially bright and has dark patina in the recesses. The wood is poor with cracks and a loose piece at the lock inlet, along with some other cracks and repairs. Some of the surfaces have an aged redone glossy varnish. The lock assembly needs extensive repair work. The mainspring has become disengaged from the sear and is visible at the bottom of the lock plate as it was separated from the wood when it disengaged the rear retention stud on the lock plate.
